Virus Warnings & Assistance

Unread postby Rhiannon » Sun Jan 04, 2004 2:43 am

Use this thread to announce any new viruses that come about, or that you've got and need help getting rid of.

Remember to always update your virus software, be careful about what emails you open, what files you download, and what links you visit.

If you don't have virus software, go here to get a free (and very reliable) virus checker:

If you have a virus, and your virus software isn't detecting it or cleaning it properly, the best place you can go is to http://www.symantec.com. Search for the exact name of your virus. Symantec will have exact cleaning instructions and/or a cleaning program to help you with the virus.

I'd like to suggest a few more sites.

Another nice anti virus program, this constantly is scanning files you access on the spot. I'm not sure if this will cause memory problems, I haven't noticed as I have 1GB of RAM, but I seriously doubt it will be worse on lower end machines

This program watches your registry and system files, and will report any changes made to it. These changes could be you installing a program or in other cases something unauthorized. Also it will detect any incoming attempts to connect to your IP (good for stopping trojans), it aslo has a nice tracer to provide the ISP, which you can then report to them the IP that is abusing the internet. They also have updated virus news.

Virus warning.

We should all be on awares because of the latest craze in internet-wide e-mail virii, MyDoom (or something like that). Be very wary of e-mails from strangers and e-mails with unknown attachments. Update your virus detection/protection software. Best of all, stay on guard and make sure you know what you're opening or downloading when you do so.

Not only that, there's a new variant.

That's Symantec's Novarg/MyDoom Resource Center. Watch your email and downloads, everyone.

The worm arrives as an e-mail with an attachment that can have various names and extensions, including .exe, .scr, .zip or .pif. The e-mail can have a variety of subject lines and body texts, but in many cases it will appear to be an error report stating that the message body can't be displayed and has instead been attached in a file, experts said.

You might be referring to Gator - they install spyware in your computer and track where you go, letting other companies know what you've been doing. As for me, I've been pretty inactive because my computer seems to have encountered a problem with the system registry, and on top of that the CD-ROM drive hasn't been working for a while, so it may be out of play indefinitely.
