Core i7

Anyone else jump on the bandwagon? For me, upgrading from a Q6600 to a Core i7 920 did wonders in terms of gaming, with about at least a 10fps bump to the minimum fps in all of my games. The upgrade is especially noticable in GTA4, where my FPS nearly doubled. As for multitasking, I haven't noticed the difference from my Q6600, although I don't think I multitask very heavily to begin with.

My schedule pens me to get new processor in 2010. That is when Elemental will be release which is what I'm benchmarking to take full advantage of my 64-bit machine.

Is your core watercooled? Mine is which gives my Q6600 a performance boost through efficiency. - I don't think I'll water again, it has left me a paranoid wreck.

Naw, my Q6600 PC was a Gateway FX, which had this really strange and enormous cooler linked with one of the case's 120mm fans. My new PC with the i7 is aircooled on Intel's stock cooler. The only downside is that the chip runs pretty hot on this stock cooler, idling at barely below 50C.

Paranoid wreck? That the pipes would burst at any instant?

Pretty much, or that I haven't screwed the joints tightly enough. Or something in the system fails and my processor's temperature hikes up and my entire machine melts. The usual.

It is why I've only kept the system on the cpu and left the gpu to air, keeping it simple. Of course I've got a really good graphics card. BFG 9800 GT OC. Idle temperature is 30 degrees, on load it never goes past 45.

The 9800GT that came with my Core i7 system is really well cooled as well, which is a surprise to me, since my old 8800GT was pretty hot. Does yours use the stock cooler?

I now have an ASUS 4870 swapped into my new i7 system from my old rig, and although it gives me great performance, the card runs hot even on its non-reference cooler, and gives me that ATI trademark "microstuttering" of sorts. I'm definitely going green again after this.

I wonder how long x58 will stay strong...I'm probably done with upgrading until Crysis 2.

Yeah, my 8800GTS was stock, horribly oversized cooler attached on the bottom. The BFG card is thin(normal) and just has a giant fan on the processor. No other pointless boxing. I'm rather glad it failed which forced me to replace it.
