It happens from time to time. It used to be my habit to reply to them with something goofy, but the officially condoned policy now is to just ignore the bot threads. Eventually they'll get cleaned up. While they're around, they're at least good for a laugh. I've seen some ridiculous ones before advertising things like Armani, Viagara, toothpaste and car insurance in the same post in completely broken English.

We're quite aware of them, I assure you. If you would like to help, click on that little report post icon when you see one and flag it as spam so the people who can deal with it spot it easily. That is especially helpful for spam posts within valid topics. We should spot actual spam topics easily enough.

It is definitely frustrating. And quite a development effort to combat them...

There's a catch 22 in that. If I customize the board too heavily to defend against spammers I make it very difficult to upgrade the software the board is based on, which means over time we get more spammers because they've worked around the security features which once worked in the board. There are things we could do to combat them, but many of those things would have a negative impact on legitimate members who want to join or participate.

How can we stop the spambots for good?

Aside from shutting down registration completely, there is no way to stop the spambots.

It's just so frequent - it happens a lot, I mean on most forums you see spammers like 3-4 times a month, but here we have them 1-2 a week. That has to be a way to combat them, as it's annoying to report posts all the time.

If you find it annoying to report posts, feel free to just leave them. I usually catch them anyway.

Most major/active forums do have issues with spambots. We aren't the only ones. Spam is a huge issue on the Internet these days and there really isn't a completely spam-proof solution short of shutting down the Internet.

As James said, it's a delicate balance between blocking the spambots and not making it too difficult for genuine members to sign up and use the board.

It's just they are advertising annoying stuff , thank god they are not porn bots. So the topic doesn't bug me, I won't report but if it is a spam post I don't like, I'll report it. Leave stuff that don't bother, and only report I don't like for spam posts. Good? Okay.

Most forums do have spammers , example Tecmo Koei Europe which the 80% of the userbase there are spammers.
It's probably something to do with the forum software. Or how the domain is and/or how old the forum is. Usually newer forums don't get attacked as much, but still do. I hate spam so much, I don't even know why it is here, it's damn impossible to stop it on the internet, so we just have to live with it I guess.

So I guess we just have to leave the registrations open because we could be keeping out members who want to post, damn spam bots ca ruin everything.

Yeah, the way I look at it, spam is like flies and wasps and mosquitoes--annoying as hell but don't let them deter you from enjoying the outdoors and the scenery.

Sometimes new forums don't have much spam just because the spambots haven't found them yet.
